SupportCategory: Simple Object DesignerLicensing Sandbox vs Production
bradley.ernst asked 3 months ago
I am wanting to purchase SOD today. I have a Sandbox and Production environment. Do I need to license both environments? Do I only need to license Sandbox and then export/import the app to Production? Please advise on the best way to handle licensing for ongoing development with incremental releases.

You only need one license for all environments in a tenant. One license will cover your production and all sandboxes.

Our recommendation is to keep a sandbox for your development and then use the downloaded app that you get from publishing to the sandbox to upload and deploy to your production. So:
  1. Develop in a sandbox
  2. Upload .app file to production.
The downloaded app doesn't appear until the Simple Object Designer is licensed in the sandbox.

Thanks for the quick reply and clarification Erik! I just completed the purchase and am fully licensed now. Does this mean that my Production environment technically does not require SOD to be installed? So, just use SOD in Sandbox for development, then publish/export, then import app into Production? Or does the app package also contain SOD or require SOD to be present in Production?

Yeah, you don’t need SOD installed in production. The app you’re creating is completely standalone without any dependencies to SOD.
