How to perform a transfer when creating a new document in the same table

Hi So, I created a custom field in the sales header table.  There are several different types of documents in that fit in the sales collection of tables.  How do I trigger a transfer of data for a custom field on say a blanket order that should flow to the Sales Order when using the make order function?  Right not it does not transfer the data.
